In 1984, Richard Darcey began Midland Tractors in a rented shed in Brighton, 20km north of Hobart. He was the John Deere Agricultural dealer for southern Tasmania. Being a one-man operation, he completed spare parts and office duties in the mornings and closed the shop in the early afternoon to carry out field service or visit customers with sales enquiries.
